Data Scientist Intern for GSI.

This is a great opportunity for a graduate self-starter to be part of a dynamic and leading-edge analytics company in the very exciting space tech sector.  This is a key role to support product delivery and development in our multi-disciplinary team based in Edinburgh.

GSI specialises in forestry, land and carbon, creating unique commercially valuable management information to drive sustainable outcomes. With deep roots in environmental sciences, we harness next-generation artificial intelligence to transform satellite optical and radar data, UAV, drone and ground surveys into valuable solutions tailored to our clients’ needs. Our innovative combinations of data sources and artificial intelligence enable us to go beyond the straightforward classification of natural assets, providing highly accurate solutions for forestry, land management and carbon offsetting across the world.

 

We are an ambitious team of individuals, leveraging patent-protected methodologies to extend our product range and list of repeat clients.  Our advanced analytics are delivered at scale with demonstrable accuracy, placing us at the leading edge of a new wave of geospatial companies.

 

We are looking for a motivated and conscientious intern to join our team.  They will be supported in the development and delivery of data products through a series of projects.  We are inviting applicants to take this opportunity to enhance their skillsets by working for an established business with a strong and exciting foundation in technical innovation.

 

This role will provide full-time employment for a duration of six months.  The successful candidate will have a strong scientific approach to data investigation, characterisation and visualisation.  This will be supported by excellent verbal and written communication skills to document and present data analyses.

 

The successful applicant will be supported through a structured onboarded process, introducing our vision, business, and methodology.  As an SME, we offer an experience beyond the confines of a role in a larger company – with the chance to make a real difference.

 

Responsibilities

  • Join the GSI production team to deliver both commercial and grant-funded contracts

  • Data modelling with supporting analysis and visualisation of model accuracy

  • Provide written reports on data quality and new algorithms

  • Application of existing GSI methodology and tools to new data sets

  • Opportunity to enhance and innovate new tools and analytics aligned with business needs

Skills

  • Clear and positive communication – written and verbal

  • Honours degree or above in mathematics, data science, or geoscience is preferable, but other scientific disciplines will be considered

  • Python scripting, and knowledge of data science and visualisation Python libraries

  • Experience of working with geospatial data is preferable but not essential – full training and support will be provided

  • Scientific approach to problem solving
