An internship at GSI during a global pandemic

Our digital media administrator, Amy tells us about her internship experience.

When I joined as an intern at the beginning of a global pandemic, it was certainly not what I had in mind when I first applied for the role of Digital Media Administrator at GSI. However some things are completely out-with our control. It must be said this experience taught me some incredibly important lessons - the ability to adapt being one.

My time at GSI started in late February -just as COVID-19 was making its way over to the U.K. My first few weeks were spent in the office which I was grateful for as it gave me a chance to get to know the company and how things worked. On my first day I was involved in tasks straight away, helping design a company brochure. The weeks progressed and I was continuing to learn and absorb as much information as I could. Then COVID hit and life changed. GSI made the quick decision to protect staff and close up the office. We were told that we would be working from home for the foreseeable future. I was initially worried how things might work from home - would communication be an issue? However these fears quickly disappeared once I got into the swing of working from home. The communication remained the same and I could continue my internship and learning experience online.

I was given lots of interesting tasks and responsibilities during my role which was great. Helping to re-design parts of the website, creating content for social media and lastly helping bring together an important article are just a few of my highlights. GSI really helped me grow - I learnt so many valuable skills to take forward with me in my working life and for that I am incredibility grateful.

An internship at GSI is a fantastic opportunity to advance your skills in your chosen sector whether that be in the data science, remote sensing, marketing or digital media sector!
